How can wealth passed from one generation to the next help rural communities thrive? A Lunch & Learn on Friday, November 6, 2026, will explore this question at Grey Roots Museum & Archives in Owen Sound. Presented by Community Foundation Grey Bruce and Brightshores Health System Foundations, the workshop runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Although designed for professional advisors, its themes connect with students, community leaders, and researchers interested in rural development and charitable giving.
Dr. Ryan Gibson, the Libro Professor in Regional Economic Development at the University of Guelph, will discuss how transfers of wealth between generations could support rural Canada. As younger generations move to cities, wealth may also leave rural communities. His presentation will explore how charitable giving and professional advice can help support these communities’ futures. Laurie Fox will share an update on Canada’s Will Power Campaign, which encourages people to support causes they care about through their wills and other financial assets. Steve Lowe will discuss the Alternative Minimum Tax and capital gains inclusion rates, including their potential effects on charitable giving and estate planning.
The event will close with lunch and opportunities to connect with charities participating in the Will Power Campaign. The discussions offer a starting point for thinking about how family decisions, research, and community action can shape the future of rural places. Registration costs $50 per person, including lunch, and is due by October 30. Register through Eventbrite or contact Community Foundation Grey Bruce at 519-371-7203.
