Photo of Varinder NandhraAfter seven years in the corporate world, Varinder discovered his passion for community building and transitioned into municipal economic development. He joined the City of Hamilton’s Economic Development team and later the City of Brampton, where he helped promote local industries, support small business growth, strengthen partnerships with post-secondary institutions and innovation hubs, and attract both domestic and foreign investment to the municipalities.
During his five years in the municipal sector, Varinder developed a deep interest in the intersection of community identity, tourism, heritage, and economic development. This inspired his decision to pursue graduate studies to explore how these fields can inform strategic planning and policy development that strengthen communities.

As a Graduate Research Assistant on the Bridging the Knowledge Gap project, an initiative led by Dr. Gibson at the University of Guelph, Varinder contributes to research examining how rural development findings can be effectively translated into actionable knowledge for local leaders, practitioners, and policymakers. The project evaluates both human- and AI-generated research summaries to improve access to evidence-based information for rural communities across Ontario.

Varinder’s research interests include heritage planning, adaptive reuse of aging buildings, workforce development, and newcomer attraction in both rural and urban contexts. He is passionate about helping Ontario communities adapt to demographic change while preserving their cultural and historical assets.
