At the World Community Development Conference in Glasgow, Scotland, Dr. Ryan Gibson presented new research examining how rural communities in Ontario are adapting to major changes brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, economic shifts, technological change, and demographic trends. The conference, co-hosted by the International Association for Community Development and the University of Glasgow, brought together community development professionals and researchers from around the world. More information about the event is available on the conference website.
Dr. Gibson’s presentation, titled *Recalibrating Rural Futures: Post-Pandemic Transformations and the Evolving Practice of Rural Economic Development in Ontario, Canada, highlighted findings from a recent research initiative involving surveys with rural economic development practitioners across Ontario. The research explored how these professionals view their changing roles and the skills and resources they need to support rural communities. Participants reported that their responsibilities have expanded significantly in recent years as communities face new economic and social challenges.
The findings suggest that rural economic development is in a period of transition. Practitioners are being asked to take on broader responsibilities while often working with limited staff and financial resources. The study identified important skill areas, preferred approaches to professional learning, and opportunities to better support those working in rural development.
