Canada’s housing crisis continues to challenge communities across the country, but the experiences of rural municipalities are often overlooked in broader policy discussions. In her Master of Science (Planning) Major Research Paper, The Housing Crisis in Rural Ontario, Aubree Erickson explores how rural communities face unique housing and homelessness challenges while operating within governance and funding structures largely shaped by upper levels of government.

The research highlights the critical role local governments play in delivering housing and homelessness services despite having limited revenue-generating tools and policy flexibility. Erickson argues that rural municipalities are well positioned to develop community-specific housing solutions when supported through collaborative partnerships with provincial and federal governments.

By examining housing through a rural lens, this research contributes to a deeper understanding of the distinct challenges facing rural Ontario and the importance of governance, policy, and funding approaches that reflect local realities. The findings offer valuable insights for planners, policymakers, and community leaders seeking effective and responsive housing solutions.
