For almost 20 years, the Canadian federal government use to employ a ‘rural lens’ for reviewing federal policies and programs to ensure they were appropriate for rural and northern communities. This research project was commissioned by Tillväxtverket, the Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth, to examine the successes and challenges of the Canadian experience of rural proofing. This research examines the role of the Rural Secretariat, the rural lens, and generate a series of lessons learned from the Canadian experiences.
