How can rural communities prepare for and economically benefit from strategic investments in manufacturing? This research examines the lessons learned from recent large-scale investments in rural manufacturing from across Canada and internationally to assist Ontario communities prepare for potential future investments. The research will employ a mixed methods approach including (i) a jurisdictional scan and analysis of recent investments in rural manufacturing throughout Canada and international locations with relevance to Ontario (Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, United Kingdom, United States), (ii) an in-depth case study analysis of experiences transferable to rural Ontario, and (iii) a series of participatory workshop with rural Ontario actors to validate and refine the analysis. The research will generate recommendations to empower rural Ontario communities to prepare for, maximize the benefits, and minimize the risks from mega-investments in manufacturing.
